No I’m not*
Why don’t I have the skills it seems like everybody else was born with I can’t even have a normal conversation with people let alone a girl I not even my dad or my mo or sister. I have only had 1 friend my entire life. I started to get homeschooled after the 7th grade and spent most time in the house after we moved in with my grandmother now I’m 18 don’t have any friends and no social skills or conversation skills can these things be learned? I have low self asteem and confidence that I am trying to work on I have started to work out to try and get confidence what else can I do I have also tried hypnosis.
‘Feel the fear and do it anyway,’ ‘the only thing to fear is fear itself,’ check out some online fear guidance.
Check out some stats online regarding introversion and shyness.
You’ll feel a little better already.
Ask your parents and sister how they honestly see you, what they honestly recommend to you, how you honestly feel. You may be rather suprised with the reaction. I don’t know them, but I know they love you unconditionally.
Start with small social situations that are low risk, join a hobby club (not street fighting or kareoke, you know what sort of people, scenario, indeed interests you want to start with) where there’s little danger of rejection because of other’s misunderstanding your predictament. Certainly go at least three times, wallflowers, the slightly introvert, the untrusting, may say little at all to others at the club themselves. Remember - you are not alone. Start random conversation about the hobby in question, helps if it’s something that you are interested in, or blag it and learn it from google, there’s always time for experimentation in our interests.
After a couple of goes break into conversation about something else general and appropriate (the weather, the ball game, the news) when you feel even only a little more comfortable with those you have started talking too - remember people primary become friends through random situations that they didn’t predict.
Note your feelings (they are going to be mainly fear based at this point), note your thoughts (remember you control your thoughts, your thoughts control your feelings, between them they control your behaviour, your behaviour controls your future - therefore you control your future, the central idea of CBT, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, REBT, Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy, do google them). Note your progress, however quick and easy, slow and painful.
Try another club, stick with the first no matter what - this can be you’re lesson in endurance. Don’t hide. Don’t run. Face it. When you hit the world of work you’ll have to maintain this, the salary keeps you alive no matter how you relate to you colleages (within sensible boundary’s of course).
Maybe try another club dependant upon your progress, by this point though you have hopefully made at least another friend, possibly ten. It’s time to have fun.
You know what fun is to you. Choose something unrelated to the hobby. A coffee bar (alcohol is a great way to lower inhibitions, but to the chronically anxious or severly shy, an emotional dependence may grow quickly, so let’s stick you the undrugged you for now) daytrip? Sport? Video games? You’ll suss it out. Invite them and the friend you have already, or just them, you’ll know how you feel. But remember the more you try to push the boundaries of your comfort zone the more you’ll feel comfortable in those situations in the future.
At the end of the day, if the problems persist dispite your best efforts, and by that I mean consistant action, you can always talk to a doctor. There are many disorders (it’s a harsh taboo word, don’t take those connotations to heart) that cause these kind of problems, some arise from circumstances, sometimes they cause circumstances. There are many professional therapies (including the one’s mentioned, which are little more than thought exercises with guidence from an approved practicioner, all very scientific and proven). It’s easy to get caught up in labels and the hinderences that they can cause, but a professional diagnosis is generally a path to treatment.
You’re probably the other side of the world from me, but right now, I’m your friend. You articulated yourself to me, albeit in written form, I responded, albeit just one passage. I would have no concerns about meeting you, I’m sure you are a pleasant person. I’m not suggesting it, that’s not the solution you need. I’m suggesting that there are a lot of people out there, there are a hell of a lot of different ways to meet them, plenty of them will want the best for you, alongside plenty who won’t - that’s people. Those that do maybe aren’t as full of conditions about being your mate as you might worry.
Regarding women, there’s honestly no rush. Find the right kind of women and they’ll probably be less of a challenge to get along with that male friends, there’s no competitivety, they can be more sensitive.
Start with your family though. Unless there is something not mentioned by you, they love you completely, no matter how much of a pain getting on with them may seem to be.
Good luck mate.

I had a conversation about this with a relative recently, and was surprised to discover that she does this. I had a look on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossolalia and it seems that there are three ‘materialist’ explanations - mental illness (no longer considered a valid explanation), hypnosis (less likely), or learned behaviour (most likely).
What do you think? Are you happy with the "learned behaviour" hypothesis?
Glossolalia is fabricated, meaningless speech.
According to Dr. William T. Samarin, professor of anthropology and linguistics at the University of Toronto,
glossolalia consists of strings of meaningless syllables made up of sounds taken from those familiar to the speaker and put together more or less haphazardly …. Glossolalia is language-like because the speaker unconsciously wants it to be language-like. Yet in spite of superficial similarities, glossolalia fundamentally is not language (Nickell, 108).
When spoken by schizophrenics, glossolalia are recognized as gibberish. In charismatic Christian communities glossolalia is sacred and referred to as "speaking in tongues" or having "the gift of tongues." In Acts of the Apostles, tongues of fire are described as alighting on the Apostles, filling them with the Holy Spirit. Allegedly, this allowed the Apostles to speak in their own language but be understood by foreigners from several nations.
Glossolalics behave in various ways, depending on the social expectations of their community. Some go into convulsions or lose consciousness; others are less dramatic. Some seem to go into a trance; some claim to have amnesia of their speaking in tongues. All believe they are possessed by the Holy Spirit and the gibberish they utter is meaningful. However, only one with faith and the gift of interpretation is capable of figuring out the meaning of the meaningless utterances. Of course, this belief gives the interpreter unchecked leeway in "translating" the meaningless utterances. Nicholas Spanos notes: "Typically, the interpretation supports the central tenets of the religious community" (Spanos, 147).
Uttering gibberish that is interpreted as profound mystical insight by holy men is an ancient practice. In Greece, even the priest of Apollo, god of light, engaged in prophetic babbling. The ancient Israelites did it. So did the Jansenists, the Quakers, the Methodists, and the Shakers.
There is evidence that while speaking in tongues people experience a sharp decrease in frontal lobe function, the area of the brain that enables reason and self-control. There is also increased activity in the parietal region of the brain, which takes sensory information and tries to create a sense of self relating to the world. Psychiatrist Andrew Newberg, Director of the Center for Spirituality and the Mind at the University of Pennsylvania, studied five African-American Pentecostal women who frequently speak in tongues. As a control activity, Newberg had the women sing gospel tunes while moving their arms and swaying.*
Newberg gave the Pentecostals an intravenous injection of a radioactive tracer that allowed him to measure blood flow and "see" which brain areas were most active during the behaviors. Newberg and his associates published their findings in the November 2006 issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging. During glossolalia, the part of the brain than normally makes a person feel in control was essentially shut down. The findings make sense, says Newberg, because speaking in tongues involves giving up control and feeling a "very intense experience of how the self relates to God."*
Newberg noted that the glossolalia responses were the opposite of those of people in a meditative state. When people meditate their frontal lobe activity increases, while their parietal activity decreases. In meditation, one loses the sense of self while controlling one’s focus and concentration.
The Pentecostal movement seems to have originated in the 19th century,* although the Biblical basis for the practice is traced to the Acts of the Apostles. The practice of Pentecostals differs, however, from what is described in Acts. Pentecostals utter gibberish and claim that they are speaking in a language understood by God but not by other Pentecostals, but in Acts we are told that those present not only spoke "with other tongues" but "every man heard them speak in his own language."

I was just wondering if he is? I am doing a little reading, but I found something really hard to believe. It is said that Erickson was able to make a man grow taller with hypnosis. I don’t think this is possible, but I am not saying it is *impossible*. I decided to do some research and found that every cell in our bones replace them selves the same way we grow. I have also read about hypnosis involved in things like mole removal, cancer, and pain management. To be fair really we don’t see many hypnosis studies about these kinds of things, how can we say it’s impossible? I don’t like to under estimate the power of the mind. I have read a lot of placebo studies and found them intriguing. pretty interesting to be honest. I don’t know though, just wondering If Milton Erickson is a reputable hypnotist?
Dr Erickson was a reputable hypnotist and medical doctor (he’s dead). This would seem to be a one off case where the person had psychological problems. From the blog comments below it seems he was surprised it was possible as well. I really wouldn’t expect this to be possible in general. Hypnosis isn’t magic and can’t get the body to do something that it can’t naturally do.
A few years ago, I came across a free audio mini-series about hypnosis on the internet by a man identified as David X. The first 5 audios were a secretly recorded conversation between David and his friend Matt.
Anyway, in audio #5, David talked about hypnosis in the martial arts world. He mentioned a grandmaster who practiced a form of Aiki-Jitsu. He let it slip that it was master Quin, Chin, or something like that. But this grandmaster developed a system of "controls" during combat that he could use to influence his opponent’s decisions. He gave an example that as David was rushing at the grandmaster to attack him, the grandmaster waved his hand and suddenly David was facing another way. This he called a "target replacement". David also said that the grandmaster had written several books (I am looking for those as well). Apparently, the grandmaster’s school imploded and nobody knows what happened to him.
Now I know that the internet is full of crap, but this stuff sounds so cool that I think it is worth checking out. I am a 3rd degree in Tae Kwon-Do, and I am looking to branch out, and this definitely sounds like an art that would interest me.
Can anyone give me any information as to the validity of this martial artist’s claims, or the audio series as a whole?
Thank you.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
Fortunately for the majority of fools these frauds do not last to long. This is one of those instances of those systems that only work on their own indoctrinated students. It is a form of HYPnosis that when exposed by the bright light of reality vanishes like the chi ball throwing master and the rest of that side show.
There are real combat techniques that have some effect such as redirection of someones force when they lunge toward you or throw a punch, kick or reach to grab you that seem almost supernatural when performed by a master who trains every day. This is only due to them making it look easy not because it is by some mental power.
About a year ago my girlfriend moved out to China. Things remained great between us, we talked almost every night for hours straight through almost that whole year until about the events of about two weeks ago. One night about two weeks while we did our usual talk here on the internet she started bringing stuff up about this "Christian" group she got into while in China. On the subject about the group she talked the leader of the group. She talked about how much she admires him and looks up to him. She talked about how he could speak to God in an unknown language, has the power to heal and can tell her things God is saying to her(O_o). Then she went on to say he was telling her to stay away from me because God was saying I’m interfering with her life and her growth in Jesus Christ. This ticked me off the guy didn’t know me at all and he was telling her to stay away from me even though he didnt know anything about me and her. I explained to her i didn’t agree with that or the sounds of that group. Infact it creeps me out. My girlfriend then got highly offended, got angry and stormed off and said she didnt want to talk.
The Next night she comes back on and everything seemed oddly normal she talked about her day and was calm, then at the end of the conversation she suddenly told not to message her for awhile and i was like ok? Well a few days go by and I go on to facebook to talk to her, to find she blocked me. So I went on skype blocked there and Msn also blocked there. This highly confused me because she seemed calm the last i talked to her. Then all the sudden I’m blocked on everything. So I approached her brother about what was going on. He explained to me that her group leader came over that night I talked to her, completely bashed on me and my biblical views and told her I was a weed in her life and she needed to stop talking to me. He then ordered her to block me on everything and she did. Her brother also told me she yelled at him for talking to me and said he shouldn’t be talking to anyone that has opposing views from what their leader was teaching them. Since that final night I talked to her I haven’t heard from her since. But I have continued to keep in contact with her brother to keep figuring out what’s going on(hes out of the question for help though because he’s fairly lazy and gets easily annoyed when I ask for it….the only thing he‘ll do is tell me what’s going on). The last thing her brother told me was the leader of this group gave her an “Accountability” partner(who ironically also highly hates me…even though she also doesn’t know me) to help keep her away from me…..making things just that much harder for me to contact her or ever hear from her again.
I’ve tried different attempts on skype to talk to her by creating new accounts and sending her messages urging her to talk out this situation with me(which is difficult on there because you can only use a low amount characters at a time when sending a message to someone your not friends with, not exactly enough room to write a full good message) but to no prevail, she wouldn’t respond to any of them…. So I gave up on that idea for not only not working but also because I didn’t want to keep harassing her with small messages.
The only conclusions I’ve drawn from this whole situation is this guy is taking complete control of her life and she’s developed some emotional attachment to him because she feels hes there for her and right on everything he says( and she doesn’t have a thing for him crush wise, shes 18 and hes like 30 something so i know that isnt it). I really don’t know what to do in this situation. In the past weeks I’ve fallen into a depression and have worried nonstop about this whole situation(escipally after learning hes convincing her to stay in China for more years). Me and this girl dated, and were close friends for over two years and suddenly shes gone under the hypnosis of a cult style leader, hating and ignoring me. How do i try and reason with this girl and get her to talk?(only way I can is through those real short messages and keep in mind she gets offended easily on a lot of this…)or is there another way to this situation? I want to do what I can to get her away from this creep that’s controlling her life and try to get her back to her normal self. How do I win her back from him??
You are not going to get a good answer at YA. Go to the Rick Ross forum and ask there http://forum.rickross.com
IMO: Yes it is a cult with sophisticated techniques. Very often cult members have a sexual attraction to the cult’s leader. It is standard cult procedure to have a "buddy" watch over all the activities of a new members and cut them off from all families and friends.
I am a first-time buyer of a webcam and would like to use it with Skype to talk with family in another country. From all the reviews I read it seems that this is a good product but wanted to confirm its compatibility with skype. Thanks a bunch.
Yes, sure, it is compatible with skype.
