Is Alienware really that bad (service/quality)?

I’ve been thinking about purchasing an Alienware laptop for some time now, but whenever I look at reviews online from customers it’s nothing but nightmare stories. Everything from customer service to hardware failure. PC magazines usually review the laptops favorably, and I’d imagine if they were REALLY that terrible they probably wouldn’t still be in business.

Is this a case of the majority of those who have no problems with alienware machines are quietly (and happily) using their products, while those few who have had a bad experience are lighting up the internet with bad reviews? (I know I have owned products before that I have seen blasted online, without any problems at all)

So in summary: Are Alienware machines and customer service as bad as people say, or not?

[I am aware that they are rather overpriced and that you are paying for the brandname, but I just want to know about the quality]
The thing that keeps me coming back to alienware is that most problems I see online are from 2006 and 2007. I don’t think I’ve ran into many problems of 2009 problems.

Also "official" reviewers are usually highly positive.

NO

I’ve had NO trouble what so ever out of my alien ware, and yea it was a bit high priced, but everything in it is top of the line.

I can not answer for customer service as I have never need to call them, but I can honestly say I’ve never owned a computer truer than this one.

Mine is a desktop, not a laptop.

people love to bash Alien ware, because they can’t afford it.

They are now Dell… and I stopped using Dell years ago because of the reliability and customer services issues.

I objected to guaranteed next day fixes that took 8 weeks and ‘new’ machines that were replaced within a week with second hand scratched up remanufactured ones.

And the constant attempts to sell extended warranties… always (IMHO) a sign of a company that is exploiting the gullible.
