I have a feeling we’re in for a drought from 2010-2012….

2009:
1st: Rickey Henderson
later: nobody (Cone, Grace, Orosco, and M.Williams are the best of the rest)

2010:
1st: nobody (could be the year for Jim Rice or Bert Blyleven to get in).
later: Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez
maybe/maybe not: Andres Galarraga, Fred McGriff

2011
1st: Jeff Bagwell (it will be close)
later: nobody
maybe/maybe not: Bret Boone, John Franco, Juan Gonzalez, Tino Martinez, Rafael Palmeiro, Larry Walker

2012 (what a weak class):
1st: nobody
later: nobody
maybe/maybe not: Tim Salmon, Bernie Williams

2013:
1st ballot: Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Barry Bonds (possibly), Roger Clemens (possibly)
later: Sammy Sosa (possibly)
maybe/maybe not: Sandy Alomar Jr., Julio Franco, Kenny Lofton, David Wells

edit: To Gern who thinks "At no time in history has someone with 3000 hits NOT been a first ballot." The following 3000 hit players did not get in on the first year they were ellligible: Tris Speaker (58.8%), Cap Anson (51.9%), Eddie Collins (57.2%), Nap Lajoie (64.6%), and Paul Waner (56.5%).

    2009: Rickey Henderson, 1st ballot

2010: Roberto Alomar, 3rd ballot; Fred McGriff (493 HR have to be good at some point) 10th ballot, maybe?

2011: Jeff Bagwell, 1st; John Franco (4th all time in saves, played in New York) 8th ballot; Larry Walker (hell of a player) Veteran’s committee

    2012: no one

2013: Craig Biggio 3rd ballot; Barry Bonds 1st ballot; Roger Clemens (time will tell, but he was a great pitcher before the alledged steroid use); Mike Piazza, 1st ballot

Dude, Bob Wickman is still playing. Although I’m sure some Indians fans really wish he wasn’t.

** - Depends totally if voters disqualify batters for even a whiff of PED use.
I think there are a number of first ballot guys, Henderson, Biggio and Piazza. A couple that may make it, and most that should never and will never get invited to the show.

Rickey Henderson should be a first ballot. His numbers were amazing and nobody will ever come close to his SB #’s.

Alomar, Larkin and Edgar all make it eventually but not first ballot.

Larry Walker will make it. People forget how good he was. For a while he might have been the best all around player in the game BUT he did it in Montreal.

Bagwell??? Had good numbers but there is that question over guys as big and muscle bound as he was. He might not make it.

none of the 2012 guys should get in. Bernie would be considered but probably no. Years like that is when they put in guys who are overdue and kept out because the press didn’t like them.

2013 Piazza is a first ballot guy. All the steroids guys will have to wait and maybe never get in. Lofton is interesting. He was really, really good for quite a while. Probably no but close.

For 2009, Ricky Henderson is a sure bet 1st ballot. For 2010, Roberto Alomar, who should be a 1st ballot, probably won’t be elected on the 1st ballot because of the spitting incident. Although he shouldn’t go in, there’s a chance Edgar Martinez will be elected, not first ballot, though. For 2011, Rafael Palmeiro might get in by the second ballot, although there’s a good chance that he won’t ever get in (links to steroids, despite 500 HR and 3000 hits). Larry Walker has an outside chance to be elected, but probably not on the first two ballots. 2013, though, is exceptionally rich–Bonds, Biggio and Clemens are sure-fire 1st ballot; Piazza might be 1st ballot. I’m not sure whether so many could get in at once, though…

2009: Rickey Henderson (should be one of highest % first ballot votes if the writers know what they are doing)

Possibly Matt Williams if voters see him as a non-steroid using slugger in a see of roid heads.

    2010: Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin

    2011: Jeff Bagwell -first ballot

Rafael Palmeiro - Never - Roid casualty.

2012: Bernie Williams (I wish, but it won’t happen)

2013: Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza (First ballot)
Jose Mesa (eventually, but not first ballot)

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens (standing out in the raid with their shame

2009 - Mark Grace (I dunno if it will be first ballot or not, but my guess is he will be in at some point)
    Definitely Rickey Henderson (first ballot)

2010 - Roberto Alomar (first ballot)
Fred McGriff (at some point, I dunno about the first two ballots)

2011 - Jeff Bagwell (second ballot)
John Franco (will be in at some point, but probably not the first two)
John Olerud (maybe not, but I think he may make it by the end of his time on the ballot)
    Larry Walker (first ballot)

2012 - Tim Salmon (might get in by the end of his time)

2013 - Craig Biggio (first ballot)
Julio Franco (some point while he’s on the ballot)
    Mike Piazza (first ballot)
Will be interesting to see if Bonds or Clemens do…their numbers certainly deserve first ballot, but they both juiced, so I hope they don’t

2009 - Henderson is the only lock.
    Maybe - Mark Grace
The rest of the guys are schmos.

    2010 - No locks
Maybe - Barry Larkin and Fred McGriff.
    Noone else has a chance.

2011 - Palmeiro used to be a lock, but no longer cuz of ‘roids.
Maybe - Palmeiro, Bagwell and John Franco.
Walker is a doubtful. Rest of them have about as good of a chance as me getting in.

2012 - No one from this class will get in except maybe Bernie Williams…but I doubt it.

2013 - Biggio and Piazza are locks.
    Lofton is a maybe.
Clemens and Bonds used to be locks, but now that is debatable.

The guy who thinks Dean Palmer, John Olerud and Bret Boone will get in makes me laugh.

    Good question.

    Hall-worthy potential candidates:

    2009 — Henderson

2010 — Alomar, Larkin, Martinez, McGriff

2011 — Bagwell (I don’t think Franco will get in any time soon, but as evaluation and appreciation of relievers improves, he may suddenly surprise us). I’d vote for Palmeiro, but he’s the smoking gun candidate, and I am certain his candidacy is doomed. Perhaps that will be enough blood for the writers, and far less substantiated candidates, particularly McGwire, will then get their due.

    2012 — shutout

2013 — the bonanza. Biggio, Bonds, Clemens, Piazza, and (not listed) Sosa. This will of course not actually happen, but it should.
